Everyone suffers from the occasional bowel disturbance, but for sufferers of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, symptoms of this disorder may be more pronounced or occur regularly. IBS occurs when the muscles in your intestines contract faster or slower than normal - causing pain, cramping, gassiness, bloating, constipation and/or sudden bouts of diarrhea. Between 10-20% of the population experiences IBS.

IBS is also referred to as spastic colon, mucous colitis, spastic colitis, nervous stomach or irritable colon. Whatever the name, it is important that your intestinal/digestive system is healthy, so food is properly broken down into the nutrients that your body needs and absorbs, providing fuel to function.

If your intestinal system is not working as it should, this can cause damage to the lining of your intestinal tract, which could hinder digestion and absorption and lead to more serious health problems down the road.

IBS has many underlying causes that can often be successfully treated with alternative therapies. Spinal manipulation may improve symptoms of IBS in some individuals, creating a balancing effect on the nerves that supply impulses to the intestinal tract.
