Fibromyalgia is a widespread, muskuloskeletal disorder
characterized by chronic pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons
- the fibrous tissues of the body - and by fatigue. Other symptoms
often include extreme tenderness in the muscles, headaches, digestive
problems, stiffness, memory and concentration problems, dizziness,
nausea, numbness and tingling, fluid retention, and "unrefreshed
sleep," the feeling you get upon waking that you've just
been hit by a truck.
Fibromyalgia is closely related to chronic fatigue
syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome, and it's possible that
these are all simply different aspects of the same underlying
disorder.
Millions suffer from this debilitating condition,
for which there is no known cause. Fibromyalgia affects more women
than men, and strikes those of any age. It is often misdiagnosed,
and treatment takes a lot of work and education. However, many
patients benefit greatly from a regimen of regular and deep sleep,
medication to improve deep sleep, daily gentle aerobic exercise,
massage and chiropractic adjustments. It's also important to avoid
stress, and to treat any other existing sleep disorder.
At Cincinnati Rehabilitation Center, our
patients achieve considerable relief by getting the nerve-muscle-joint
combination working properly, which helps to decrease sensitivity
to pain and alleviate tenderness and aches, especially in the
neck and shoulder area. Call our office to find out more.
